The annual Polar Plunge is becoming something of a legend around here, drawing participants, onlookers & photographers from all over. Unofficial estimates are that today’s crowd exceeded 350-400 people, not counting all of the happy dogs that were running around having their own party. Now in it’s 9th year, the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge is the brainchild of local fitness and health guru, Janice Gaines. It is a family friendly happening that attracts young and old, alike. This year Janice channeled Dr. Seuss’ character, The Cat in the Hat, replete with the signature red striped top hat, white 4-finger gloves, red coat and bow tie. Needless to say, she was even easier than usual to spot in the crowd.
When asked why she does this event, she stayed in character and responded, “If you never did, you should. These things are fun. Fun is good.” And fun was had by all, bathers, onlookers, photogs & doggies.
